What is Surgency?

As a family doctor in the public system, I believe transparency is a form of care. I created Surgency to help my patients struggling on long waitlists who wanted clear options for timely medical attention.

Surgency is a free resource designed to empower and educate—helping you understand private pathways and find accredited surgeons within Canada. I hope Surgency brings you clarity.

Knee surgeries offered privately in Canada

Learn more about specific knee surgeries by clicking into our procedure guides below. Each provides an in-depth overview of the surgery process, cost estimates, recovery timelines, how to choose a surgeon, and the risks involved.

How does private knee surgery work in Canada?

It is important to note that healthcare regulations vary by province. Generally speaking, you will need to travel out-of-province for knee surgery unless you find a surgeon who is 'opted-out' of the public system (you can find them on Surgency, watch for surgeons with the disclaimer "Accepting patients from all provinces").

Note: Ontario doesn't allow surgeons to opt out, so Ontarians must travel for private hip surgical.

For an in-depth understanding on the private system, see How Does Private Surgery Work in Canada.

Why consider private knee surgery?

Why consider private knee surgery?

Many Canadians explore private options when the physical toll of waiting becomes too high. Facing a 12 to 24-month delay for a total knee replacement or ligament repair often leads to deteriorating joint function, increased reliance on painkillers, and the inability to handle stairs, exercise, or simple daily walks.

Domestic quality vs. medical tourism

Staying in Canada for private care ensures access to Canada's high orthopedic standards without the uncertainty of traveling abroad. While the U.S. healthcare system imposes prohibitive costs, medical tourism in countries like Mexico or Costa Rica can introduce significant travel risks during recovery. Domestic private surgery offers a faster, guaranteed date with familiar post-operative safety.

Restoring your mobility

Choosing the private route isn't about skipping a queue; it is about taking control of your health to stop the progression of arthritis and return to an active lifestyle sooner, effectively removing one more patient from the overburdened public waitlist.

How Surgency helps

Surgency acts as your navigational tool—not a medical facility. We connect you with accredited, out-of-province surgical centres and licensed orthopedists. Our platform allows you to transparently compare surgeons, understand pricing, and access the information necessary to make a safe, confident choice for your knees.

Browse Accredited Canadian Surgeons

Knee surgeries are significant medical interventions accompanied by substantial medical costs. We recommend reviewing several surgeon profiles from all over the country. Going private means choice. Consider reaching out and speaking with multiple surgeons to determine who has the specific expertise for your mobility goals and feels best for you.

What to expect from private knee surgeons & clinics

When accessing private care, patients can expect a rigorous standard of safety and professionalism comparable to the best public institutions.

Accreditation & safety

Private surgical centers in Canada operate under tight regulatory oversight. Every facility is required to adhere to or surpass provincial health mandates and participates in routine accreditation audits. This guarantees that the sterility, infrastructure, and emergency protocols are equivalent to top-tier public hospitals, ensuring your safety is never compromised.

World-class surgeons

Choosing private Canadian pathways means faster care with the same high quality Canadian standards. Knee surgeons listed on Surgency are certified Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). These professionals have completed extensive residency and fellowship training (read more on understanding surgeon credentials here). Many are high-volume surgeons dedicated to knee reconstruction and replacement, bringing significant technical experience to your procedure.

Transparency and planning

Private healthcare removes the guesswork. You receive a concrete surgery date and a clear roadmap for your recovery journey. The administrative teams provide upfront answers regarding costs and logistics, while wait times are dramatically reduced—often to a matter of weeks—so you can return to an active life without indefinite delays.
