Dr. Raj Sharma is an orthopedic surgeon certified in orthopedic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, practising in Calgary. He completed his medical degree at the University of Alberta and his orthopedic surgery residency at McMaster University, followed by two fellowships: complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty at Western University, and foot and ankle surgery at McMaster University. He also holds a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Research from McMaster. His practice is focused on hip and knee replacement, including the direct anterior approach to hip replacement and revision joint replacement.
Dr. Sharma is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, a member of the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health, and Research Lead for Hip and Knee Arthroplasty in the Calgary Zone. His research examines outcomes in hip and knee replacement, with a particular focus on the anterior approach to hip replacement and on same-day discharge protocols, and has been published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. In 2019, Alberta Health Services reported that he was the first orthopedic surgeon in Western Canada to adopt a same-day discharge protocol for knee replacement surgery. He teaches hip and knee replacement technique to other surgeons through cadaveric courses in Canada and the United States.
