Procedural expertise

About

Dr. Emmanuel Michael Illical is a dual board-certified (FRCSC and American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery) and dual fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction (hip and knee arthroplasty) and orthopedic trauma. His procedural expertise includes:

  • direct anterior approach total hip replacement
  • cementless total knee replacement
  • complex primary joint replacement
  • revision total hip and knee replacement
  • peri-prosthetic fractures

After he met his wife, Dr. Illical moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2018, and served as the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at Einstein Healthcare Network. He again served in a similar role as the primary orthopaedic trauma surgeon for all complex orthopaedic trauma injuries and was the primary adult reconstruction surgeon for difficult primary total joint arthroplasty and revision total joint arthroplasty.

Since returning to Canada in 2020, he practices publicly at South Health Campus Hospital in Calgary with a high-volume hip and knee arthroplasty practice alongside orthopaedic trauma, with special interest in direct anterior total hip arthroplasty and cementless total knee arthroplasty. He is academically active within the University of Calgary’s Section of Orthopaedic Surgery, involved in residency and fellowship training, and serves as the Quality Improvement and Safety Lead for the Section.

Outside of his orthopaedic practice, Dr. Illical loves spending time with his wife and their two young children.
