About

Dr. Andrew Thamboo is a fellowship-trained otolaryngology—head and neck surgeon—based in Vancouver, with a sub-specialty practice in rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery. He completed his undergraduate degree, medical degree, otolaryngology residency, and a Master of Health Sciences in study design and epidemiology at the University of British Columbia, then completed a Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery fellowship at Stanford University under Drs. Peter Hwang and Jayakar Nayak before being recruited back to UBC. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at UBC, Fellowship Director of the UBC Endoscopic Sinus, Allergy and Skull Base Surgery Clinical-Research Fellowship, Program Director for Continuing Medical Education in the Department of Surgery, and Research Director at St. Paul's Sinus Centre. His clinical practice focuses on complex sinus disease and sinonasal and skull base tumours, including a minimally invasive day-surgery approach for select cases of nasopharyngeal cancer.

Clinical Focus & Specialties

  • Advanced & Revision Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: Primary and revision endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis, recurrent sinus infections, and nasal polyps, including image-guided and frontal sinus techniques.
  • Rhinology & Complex Sinus Disease: Medical and surgical management of chronic rhinosinusitis with and without polyps, allergic and inflammatory sinonasal conditions, and complex cases referred from allergists, respirologists, and other otolaryngologists.
  • Endoscopic & Anterior Skull Base Surgery: Minimally invasive endoscopic endonasal approaches for sinonasal tumours, skull base tumours, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak repair, including collaborative intracranial cases with neurosurgery at Vancouver General Hospital.
  • Nasopharyngeal Cancer (Day-Surgery Approach): Endoscopic surgical management of select recurrent or persistent nasopharyngeal carcinoma cases as a minimally invasive day-surgery alternative to radiation re-treatment.
  • General Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Oncology: Office-based and surgical management of general ENT concerns, with multidisciplinary collaboration for sinonasal and skull base oncology.

His private surgical practice is performed at New Westminster Surgical Centre on Nelson's Crescent in New Westminster—a four-operating-room private surgical facility one block from Royal Columbian Hospital, fully accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (including for overnight stays), with experienced surgical and nursing teams focused on patient safety, recovery, and a personalized surgical experience.
