About

Dr. Navraj Heran is a locally raised, highly specialized neurosurgeon based in Vancouver, British Columbia. As one of the only neurosurgeons in the Lower Mainland trained and actively practicing endovascular neurosurgery, he brings a rare and highly sought-after skill set to his patients.

Dr. Heran is recognized for starting the endovascular neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology program at Royal Columbian Hospital. He maintains a robust public practice at several Greater Vancouver hospitals, alongside his role as Chief Neurosurgeon at the private False Creek Healthcare Centre.

Beyond his cerebrovascular expertise, Dr. Heran manages a very busy complex and general spinal surgery practice, holding the distinction of being one of the only surgical Tarlov cyst experts in Canada and maintaining the country's largest dynamic stabilization practice.

Clinical expertise

Dr. Heran is an expert in minimal-access neurosurgical techniques. His primary areas of clinical focus include:

  • Spinal Surgery: Complex and general spine surgery, including lumbar and cervical discectomy, laminectomy, cervical disc arthroplasty (artificial disc replacement), and hybrid fusion constructs.
  • Advanced Spinal Techniques: Largest dynamic stabilization practice in Canada (using DIAM or Intraspine devices), vertebroplasty, and kyphoplasty for spinal compression fractures.
  • Cerebrovascular Surgery: Microvascular and endovascular approaches to cerebrovascular disease, including brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations.
  • Oncologic & Endoscopic Neurosurgery: Management and minimally invasive resection of brain tumors and pituitary tumors.
  • Peripheral Nerve & Specialized Conditions: Peripheral nerve surgery and specialized surgical treatment for Tarlov cysts.

Dr. Heran was inspired to become a neurosurgeon after suffering from debilitating back pain in high school that left him bedridden. This personal history drives his deep empathy and commitment to relieving his patients' pain.
